Growing Up Online

In my dissertation project, Networked Girlhoods: The Invisible Work of Growing Up OnlineI investigated teenage girls’ own perspectives on their learning and development in relation to a changing technological landscape. I argue that young women’s ways of using digital media are shaped by desires for acknowledgement and senses of constraint, difficulty, and longing. To be successful, digital literacy initiatives must better account for the psychological underpinnings of young people’s social media use.
